What We Do
We use natural dyes to colour natural fabrics.
We use both our own range of clothing that we get made in asia and second hand pieces of clothing that we find at markets and op shops to dye with a range of natural dyes. We use no synthetic dyes or toxic chemicals and use organically grown natural fibres - cotton, hemp, silk or linen - in the clothing we get made. Sometimes we make plain colour pieces in a range of colours, and sometimes we work in the traditions of shibori with indigo, the best of dyes.
Natural Dyes
We use only natural dyes - indigo, sapanwood, cutch, madder, alkanet, turmeric and other plant based materials. We think this marries better with the philiopsophy of shibori and more importantly allows us to avoid harsh chemicals. Natural dyes provide us with a wide range of colours and also introduce an interesting variety to our finished work, as achieving total uniformity of colour in one piece or reproducing exactly the same colour across a several pieces is hit and miss. Often we prefer those ones where we miss.
Natural Fibres
The clothes we get made in Asia are made from organically grown natural fibres that are sourced sustainably - cotton, silk, linen and hemp. We do not use any synthetic textiles. Our makers are a collective of five ladies who were widowed by the Bali bombing. They have joined together to try and earn a living and we are proud to support them instead of the money going to a factory owner.
How We Work
We get batches of clothes made in three sizes in Indonesia and then dye them. We will do five or so different design ideas for each season and make only ten to twenty versions (every one is different since they are all hand made) of that design across the three sizes. So every piece is a one-off, you will never see a copy of what you buy from us. There may be similar ones, but making an exact copy is simply not possible.
This is small production work using techniques that don’t like being rushed, so our output is small. We do work by request if you ask nicely. Just get in touch by email.
