Mokume is a very old shibori technique that is named for the effect it has of looking somewhat like wood grain. It is one of the more difficult techniques, not so much because it is hard to do, rather due to the fact that it can be very slow to produce as a great deal of time consuming stitching is involved.
The more stitching, the better the effect and a lot of variation and experimentation can produce less or more formal patterns. Different materials, different stitch lengths, wider spaces rows of stitches all contribute to different patterns. This technique can be used to produce quite austere almost linear patterns or very abstract patterns.
