Cochineal is a natural dye, derived from the female cochineal scale insect, which produces the colour carmine and similar shades of red, scarlet and crimson, depending on which of several different methods of extraction is used. The cochineal beetle is found primarily in South America, as well as in Mexico and southwest USA living on cactus.
It is one of the most light and heat stable natural dyes used. It is even more light fast than many synthetic dyes.
